Are you taking your throat for granted? Your throat is a major highway in your body, transporting food to your stomach and air to your lungs and voice box. It’s also a critical site for catching and neutralizing germs and bacteria that may enter the body, so it plays a massive role in warding off sickness. Because of all these essential functions, it’s important to take steps to keep your throat healthy.

Tips to Care for Your Throat Health
Here are a few things you can do to keep your throat as healthy as possible:
Stay Hydrated
A dry throat can be incredibly uncomfortable. When your throat is healthy, it’s coated with a layer of mucus (you may call it “phlegm”) that keeps the tissues of the throat hydrated and catches germs and debris that enter the throat. If this mucus layer dries out, it can lead to soreness, irritation, and inflammation, as well as increased susceptibility to infection.
Keeping your body hydrated with water and other fluids will help sustain this mucus layer and keep mucus production where it needs to be. Consider carrying a large water bottle or adding a cup or two of herbal tea into your daily routine.
Brush Your Teeth
One 2024 study found that poor oral hygiene increases the risk of throat conditions such as tonsillitis. Brushing your teeth keeps the mouth clean and free from harmful bacteria that might make its way down to the throat and cause an infection.
Brushing, flossing and using mouthwash every day and making twice-yearly trips to your dentist will significantly improve your oral hygiene. This will remove food particles, plaque and bacteria before they can cause any grief.
Take Breaks
One major cause of hoarseness and laryngitis is overworking your voice. This is especially prominent among people who use their voices a lot at work—singers, customer service representatives, teachers and lecturers, lawyers and corporate trainers, to name a few. Whether you belong to this group of professionals or you just enjoy chatting and singing, it’s a good idea to rest your voice from time to time, especially if you’ve been using your voice a lot.
Treat Your Allergies
Allergies are considered the most common chronic health condition worldwide. When pollen, pet dander, or other allergens land in your throat, it triggers an immune system overreaction that leads to throat itchiness, swelling and soreness, as well as difficulty breathing.
Manage your allergies by taking your preferred over-the-counter allergy medication, avoiding your allergy triggers and keeping an eye on the pollen count in your local weather forecast. If none of that is working and you’re still suffering through allergies, consider visiting our expert team of allergists!
