The bone and cartilage that divides the space between your nostrils is known as your septum. When your septum is deviated, or crooked, it can make it harder to breathe through your nose when hiking on The Palmetto Trail and leave you more susceptible to sinus infections. A septoplasty is the surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum.
What Happens Before a Septoplasty?
Before your septoplasty, you’ll meet with a surgeon at Palmetto ENT & Allergy for a consultation. During this appointment, they will:
- Ask you about your medical history, including any conditions you’ve had and current medications/supplements you’re taking.
- Perform a physical exam of the inside and outside of your nose and order any tests that may be necessary.
- Take photographs to reference during and after the procedure.
- Discuss expectations, including what a septoplasty can and can’t do for you.
What Happens During a Septoplasty?
A septoplasty involves the following steps:
- Administer anesthesia. You and your doctor will discuss whether intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is right for you.
- Make an incision. In most cases, incisions are made within the nasal cavity. If you’re also undergoing a rhinoplasty, the incision may be made across the columella, which is the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.
- Separate the mucosal lining. Next, the surgeon will lift away the membrane that covers the surface of the septum.
- Correct the deviated septum. The cartilage will be moved and reshaped as needed to correct the deviated septum.
- Close the incision. Once the septum is in position, the nasal mucosal lining will be repositioned and the incision will be sutured closed.
- See the results. After your splints and packing come off and swelling goes down, you’ll see the results of your septoplasty.
How Do I Care for Myself after a Septoplasty?
To decrease the chance of bleeding and swelling, you should do the following for several weeks:
- Elevate your head when sleeping
- Avoid blowing your nose
- Avoid strenuous activities, including aerobics and jogging
- Wear clothes that fasten in the front rather than clothes that pull over your head
- Follow any other post-op instructions your doctor provides
