They\u2019ll ask you about any medications and supplements you take, including over-the-counter ones. They may instruct you to stop certain drugs, as they could interfere with the surgery or your healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ll also ask you about you and your family history of allergies, reactions to anesthesia and bleeding problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure you don\u2019t eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-to-expect-from-an-adult-tonsillectomy\">What to Expect from an Adult Tonsillectomy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A tonsillectomy takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. For the procedure, you\u2019ll be put under general anesthesia, so you\u2019re asleep and pain-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the surgeon will use a scalpel to remove the tonsils. They may also use tools that involve heat, ultrasound, laser or cold temperatures to remove your tonsils or shrink away the tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people also get their adenoids out at the same time, as they sit close to your tonsils. This procedure is called an adenoidectomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re doing well after the procedure, you\u2019ll be allowed to go home the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-the-recovery-process-is-like\">What the Recovery Process Is Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For most adults, recovering from a <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/15605-tonsillectomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tonsillectomy<\/a> takes about two weeks.
