If you’re a parent, you know that children are prone to picking up bugs and minor illnesses pretty frequently. Often, these issues resolve on their own and need no additional care.

However, if your child experiences frequent or recurring problems related to their ears, nose or throat, they may need to see an ENT specialist for a proper diagnosis and to find relief from their symptoms.

Let’s examine of few of the most common childhood issues that require a visit to the ENT.

Recurring Strep Throats

Pretty much every child deals with strep throat at some point or another, as it is a highly contagious condition. However, frequent bouts of sore throat are painful and disruptive to a child’s life. If your child has had strep throat several times in one year, their primary care provider will likely refer them to an ENT specialist. In some cases, removing the tonsils or adenoids in the back of the throat can help reduce the frequency and severity of strep throat occurrences.

Frequent or Heavy Nosebleeds

Studies have shown that up to 9% of children have recurrent nosebleeds that may require additional treatment. If your child is having nosebleeds that occur once a week or that are particularly heavy, schedule an appointment with an ENT to determine the cause and see if treatments like nasal cautery may be beneficial in stopping their nosebleeds.

Chronic Ear Infections

Ear infections are incredibly common in children, largely due to the size and shape of their ears. If your child’s ear infections have become chronic, they can lead to problems like speech delays, balance issues, and hearing loss that, on rare occasions, may become permanent. Treatment with ear tubes can help prevent these problems in children with regular infections.

Ear tubes are tiny cylinders that are surgically implanted into the eardrum that help fluid drain from the ear. The procedure is quick, painless and the tubes are either removed or fall out on their own between six months to several years.

Pediatric Snoring

Snoring is not just a problem for adults. Some children snore as well, and if it is heavy or occurs frequently could indicate a more serious condition like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Because untreated sleep apnea can affect other aspects of a child’s health and well-being, it’s important to make an appointment to see what is causing your child’s frequent snoring.
